Map of part of San Francisco, California, April 18, 1908: showing buildings constructed and buildings under construction during two years after fire of April 18, 1906

This map measures recovery through buildings. The burned district provides the outline, while new and ongoing construction records the city’s progress two years after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Its publisher, the California Promotion Committee, gives the optimistic presentation a context of civic promotion. It is a particularly effective companion to a pre-disaster map, allowing readers to examine rebuilding at street level rather than treating recovery as a single headline.
