Catalog notes
This named terrain map brings the Valles Marineris canyon system into a single regional view. Color-coded laser-altimeter elevations are combined with thermal-infrared imagery, allowing the deep chasms, intervening plateaus and neighboring cratered terrain to be compared at a glance. The scale, coordinate grid and standardized feature names show how remote observations become a practical reference for planetary science. Its printed August 2026 nomenclature update also makes the sheet a record of an evolving place-name system. It complements global planetary maps by showing how a single, remarkably varied region is organized for detailed study.
