Carte des trois Arabies: tirée en partie de l’Arabe de Nubie, en partie de diuers autres autheurs. Nicolas Sanson; J. Somer; Pierre Mariette, Paris, 1654. Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, G7520 1654 .S3; World Digital Library; LCCN 2005625325.
Catalog notes
Sanson’s map divides the peninsula into the three Arabias familiar to European historical geography while drawing substantially on al-Idrisi’s medieval geographical tradition. Its pictorial mountains, colored territories, and named towns show how inherited knowledge was recast in a seventeenth-century French atlas. It offers a useful bridge between classical regional categories and later survey-based maps, rather than a direct record of Arabia in antiquity.
