A New Map of Arabia, Including Egypt, Abyssinia, the Red Sea, from the Latest Authorities. John Cary, London, 1804. Qatar National Library; World Digital Library, Library of Congress, WDL 12886; LCCN 2021668544.
Catalog notes
Cary’s map connects the Arabian Peninsula with the Nile Valley and the Horn of Africa through caravan paths and maritime routes. Journeys toward Mecca appear beside the course of the French frigate La Venus in the Red Sea. The mixture of travel information, political coloring, and speculative Nile geography captures both the practical ambitions and the limits of a London mapmaker’s regional knowledge in 1804.
