Caption
Map of the Western Sahara. Ernst Georg Ravenstein, Geographical Magazine, London, 1876. Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, G8900 1876 .R4; World Digital Library; LCCN 2005625340.
Catalog notes
Ravenstein’s map brings desert terrain, settlements, and crossing routes into a single regional view stretching from the Atlantic coast toward the Niger. Red lines distinguish the recorded itineraries of nineteenth-century travelers, while tinting marks sandy desert areas. It shows how geographical magazines assembled information about inland Africa from uneven travel observations and makes the process of mapping movement visible alongside the landscape.
