Dense hachures turn the walls of Yosemite Valley into a remarkably tactile landscape. The sheet draws on a topographical plat prepared under the Wheeler survey and names the specialists responsible for mountain drawing and lettering. It is a useful showcase for the craft behind nineteenth-century surveying maps: field measurements became a drawing, and that drawing became a reproducible image capable of communicating steep terrain without a photograph.
