Catalog notes
The Philippine archipelago sits at the center of a richly illustrated chart connecting local geography with far-reaching maritime routes. Murillo Velarde’s cartography and Nicolás de la Cruz Bagay’s engraving make this both an important mapping achievement and an image of a society linked to the Spanish empire. Twelve panels of people, landscapes and local maps surround the chart, giving readers an unusually rich view of how geography and colonial society were represented in 1734.
