Catalog notes
Circles and connecting paths put communities and relationships at the center of this map of the Southeast. It preserves an Indigenous view through copies of a deerskin original presented to South Carolina governor Francis Nicholson. Its story is about diplomacy and communication as much as distance. The displayed object is the Library of Congress’s 1929 photocopy of the surviving manuscript in the British Library, rather than the original deerskin.
