Catalog notes
A canal profile above a small map of Panama turns a narrow strip of land into an engineering challenge. Published in 1904, the sheet belongs to the period when the United States began its canal undertaking after the earlier French effort. Its vertical profile makes elevation as important as horizontal distance. The map is an early plan-era view of the project, rather than an as-built survey of the canal completed in 1914.
