Here the township grid becomes a framework for deciding which land could be settled. The catalog records instructions that distinguish odd-numbered sections from even-numbered sections and describe homestead and pre-emption arrangements. Rather than presenting railroads only as routes, this map reveals their relationship to land disposal. Its annotations show how numbered sections connected legal arrangements to particular tracts of land.
