Catalog notes
A map does not have to be printed on paper. This New York sampler, made around 1810, was embroidered in silk on silk and measures about fifteen by nineteen inches. Its stitched geographical forms reveal the physical work of mapmaking in an unexpected medium. Included here as a counterpart to engraved and printed sheets, it shows how maps can be crafted objects as well as sources of information.
