Catalog notes

This etched view turns Venice into a city that can be explored from above. Produced by an anonymous Dutch artist and issued by Amsterdam publisher Clement de Jonghe, it also credits the writer Arnoldus Montanus. The sheet belongs at the boundary between city plan and pictorial portrait: it invites readers to examine the arrangement of an unfamiliar city while appreciating the craft of its representation.
